One thing up front: the “best” brand depends on what you actually need. Are you chasing the look? Are you a real chef who’s going to put these appliances through daily abuse? Refrigerators: Sub-Zero

If I’m buying for myself, I’m going Sub-Zero every time.

This is a brand that has stood the test of time. They back their product with a 20-year guarantee — that’s not a marketing gimmick — that’s a company that knows what it built. Their customer service is undefeated in my experience; when something does go wrong, they make it right.

Yes, it’s expensive upfront. But I’ve watched neighbors burn through three refrigerators in 25 years while a Sub-Zero owner is still running the original unit. Ovens & Ranges: Wolf, AGA, and La Cornue

Wolf is my go-to recommendation if serviceability matters to you. Wolf techs are everywhere. You might pay a little more for the service call, but somebody is going to show up and get it fixed. For most homeowners, that peace of mind is worth a lot. It can take a beating from constant cooking, but the unit must be cleaned daily with use.

AGA is a different animal entirely — a traditional range cooker built to last. La Cornue sits right up there with AGA in my book. Expect 20 to 40 years out of one of these. Like the AGA, it’s built with cast iron and heavy-gauge steel — this is a range designed to be a lifetime purchase, not a 10-year appliance.

Dishwashers: Cove

No comparison here — the Cove dishwasher is a machine.

Backed by the Sub-Zero/Wolf name, this unit is a serious step above standard luxury dishwashers. Amazing interior lighting, multiple cycle options, and drying performance that actually works instead of leaving you with a wet rack of dishes at the end of the cycle. It’s not cheap, but it’s well worth the money.

Washers & Dryers: Speed Queen

For laundry, residential top-loaders from Speed Queen are the best in the field, full stop.

Wonderful customer service, and a design philosophy that’s refreshingly simple — no unnecessary electronics or gimmicks to break down over time on their standard units, which I prefer. I’ve personally seen Speed Queens still running strong well past 25 years. They’re built to work, not to impress you with a touchscreen.

The Bottom Line

If you’re investing in luxury appliances, don’t just buy the name — buy the one that matches what you actually need out of it:

• Want the longest-lasting refrigerator money can buy? Sub-Zero.

• Want an oven that’s easy to get serviced? Wolf.
